I am Rupa Parthasarathy the founder of Henna For You, a free-hand henna artist, dedicated to exploring and popularising the art of Henna. Born and brought up in the southern city of India (Chennai) I have always been aware and keen of the art since childhood. From the very first time I tried out this art form, I have been completely smitten by it. Though I constantly experiment with different mediums like glass painting and pottery, henna art is my preferred medium of expression.
My first designs of henna (mehndi as known in Hindi, an Indian language) were self –taught, though not absolutely perfect they turned out good. Good enough to be noticed and receive a compliment from my family and friends. However it was only during 2001, while my stay in Gujarat (Western India), I took up formal training in Henna, without the slightest premonition, that six years down the line the same training would prove to be my key asset to start my own Henna practice.
For a long time since training, I have been practising henna on my lovely family and my friends whenever an opportunity would present itself. It was not until 2006, during a charity event for my daughter’s day care, a passing remark made by the Director of the Centre(Kay Ishak) suggesting that I should start my own henna practice, made me venture outside my box. I am eternally thankful to Kay Ishak and her truly amazing staff who have continuously supported me in my journey so far.
As a step towards grooming to be a true professional I took up ICNHA certification exams. I have been approved by ICNHA to be a certified henna artist. ICNHA is a volunteer peer assessment of henna artists. Artists have to write an exam comprising questions on the botany, history, geography, preparation, hygiene and aftercare of Henna. Photographs of sample work are assessed along with the examination result to award the certification. I take extreme pride in being the first certified artist in Sydney, Australia.
Having come from an Indian background and exposed to Middle Eastern culture during my tenure in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), I am highly influenced and inspired by Indian and Arabic Cultures. I also draw inspiration for my designs from nature, flora and fauna. The design inspiration also comes from books by various talented henna artists. Henna page has had an immense influence on my career so far and has been a valuable reference point.
Since my launch, I have had the opportunity to work with major corporate clients and have been busy doing henna sessions for birthday parties, and private appointments. I do undertake private appointments at my home studio or can make house calls for birthdays, hen’s night out, bridal parties, corporate events and fairs upon prior appointment.
